5 Tips to Reduce Pain this Holiday Season

5 Tips to Reduce Pain this Holiday Season

The holidays are a time of excitement, but can also be a time of stress and unnecessary pain from muscle strain. For people with chronic pain in the neck or back, the strain of accomplishing the Christmas to-do list can quickly overshadow the joy of the season. This year, we have 5 tips for making the next few weeks more enjoyable and pain-free.

Tip 1 : Go easy on the shopping

Whether it’s food or gifts, overloading your shopping cart is a fast way to strain your muscles. Ordering groceries online (most stores offer free or discounted delivery on the first order), and opted for gift cards instead of heavy gifts is one way to ease the strain on your muscles. If you do want to buy personalised gifts, shopping online and selecting ‘gift wrap’ may cost you a few dollars extra but could save you an emergency trip to the doctor. It also means you’ll be receiving items in a steady flow – instead of opting for one great load out of the car boot.

Tip 2: Divvy the Cooking Tasks

The holiday season is for all to enjoy – ensure you divvy up the cooking and cleaning tasks to ease your load. Cooking in advance (eg. Pastries) or opting for a cold lunch is another easy way to avoid over-straining yourself. Before you begin cooking, ensure you assess your work station and get a chair if possible to ease the strain on your back and legs. Change positions regularly, and take short breaks to ease your muscles.

Tip 3: Don’t get caught up in the decorating

Decorating can be a fun group activity which will decrease your stress levels and up your social meter. Ensure you get someone to help you for any tasks that may strain your back or neck. Have a partner for hanging ornaments or lights to avoid repetitively reaching or twisting in a way that adds stress to your back.

Tip 4: Watch what you’re eating

Add foods to your plate that will add value to your day and avoid overeating. Continue to eat regular, healthy meals and don’t over-indulge for the sake of it. Eat to enjoy the food, and avoid eating because it’s within reach.

Tip 5: Keep up your fitness plan

Keep your daily fitness activity going – even if that’s a 15 minute stretch at the start or end of the day. Try to get a walk in if possible, as any movement is beneficial.
